Film Screening Of UNCIVILIZED
September 7, 2020 4:00 PM EDT
Directed by Michael Lees | 2020
Disenchanted with the modern world, Michael Lees heads into the forest of Dominica with some basic survival gear, religious texts, a camera, and questions: “Why did man ever leave the forest? And what makes for a good life?”
Just as he starts to acclimatize to his new life – the unexpected: Category 5 Hurricane Maria, one of the top ten Atlantic hurricanes in history, makes direct landfall. Michael must ride out the hurricane in his palm leaf and bamboo hut. With the nation in ruins, the forest destroyed, and essential services knocked out islandwide, the entire country must now return to a past way of life if they hope to survive.
Uncivilized is an adventure, as much as it is a meditation on the necessities of a good life – a timely question in an age of climate change and over-consumption.
Speakers:
- Pepukaye Bardouille, Senior Operations Officer, Global Upstream Infrastructure, International Finance Corporation
- Michael Lees, Director, Uncivilized

Clean Energy Development and Integrated Resource Planning in Island States
September 9, 2020 8:00 AM EDT
The session will focus on supporting economic growth and sustainability in island states through clean energy development and the importance of integrated resource planning in this process. Many island states have historically been dependent on imported fossil fuels for power generation, however reliance on these imports can lead to high macroeconomic vulnerability from fuel price volatility and high electricity costs at the consumer level. A growing number of island states are preparing for fundamental changes to their energy mix through the development of Integrated Resource Plans (IRPs) and new power generation plans. Transitioning to clean power generation can provide island states with improved energy security and independence, support local economic development, and combat climate change and other negative local environmental impacts. Ricardo Energy and Environment has supported various states in clean energy development plans. This session will showcase best practices and lesson learned for clean energy planning and discuss the future of integrated resource planning in island states.

Meet Ellen, the Future of Clean Maritime Transport
September 9, 2020 10:00 AM EDT
Islands have been stuck between a rock and a hard place regarding transit. On the one hand, they require vessels for transport and trading; on the other, modern boats and ferries running on diesel fuel pollute the air and water of the very islands they serve. Environmental concerns have finally gone mainstream. Industry and government have joined forces using carbon-reduced regulations and an expanding range of cleaner energy alternatives.

Intelligent Energy Solutions For Isolated Territories: The Ushant Case Study
September 10, 2020 5:00 AM EDT
The ICE project tackles the key challenge faced by the Channel area in reducing the energy vulnerability of the region. Isolated territories such as islands and peripheral communities of the Channel area are either located at the end of energy distribution networks or depends mainly on fossil fuel generation which can be expensive and vulnerable to supply issues. In this context, Ushant island (850 inhabitants) has a strong and demanding objective: reach 100% renewable by 2030 with a checkpoint at 50% in 2023 while ensuring quality and without undermining the security and reliability of the electric grid.

Innovation And Sustainable Development In The South Atlantic
September 11, 2020 8:00 AM EDT
The islands of the South Atlantic very rarely feature in global fora. They span vast distances and have very small population sizes, yet their isolation arguably drives innovation and there are many examples of island-led innovation in the region. This session focuses on Innovation and Sustainable Development in two islands of the South Atlantic: St. Helena and the Falkland Islands. The panel is comprised of island-based politicians and experts, who will showcase some exciting case studies that demonstrate how, with populations of 4,000 (St. Helena) and 3,000 (Falklands): knowledge economies are being developed that include the global export of technical skills; renewable energy goals are being set that have the potential to be world-leading, and new fibre optic cable projects are driving change and broadening the scope for sustainable development.

Climate Change, COVID-19 And The Caribbean – Civil Societies Role In SIDS
September 11, 2020 11:30 AM EDT
In 2015, in preparation for COP 21 in Paris, a number of civil society organizations came together to create awareness across the Caribbean to the threats to lives and livelihoods posed by climate change. The civil society advocacy campaign, which was built around the theme of “1.5 to stay alive”, caught the attention of Caribbean citizens and helped to amplify the voices in support of an ambitious, legally binding Paris Agreement. Five years later, despite the adoption and coming into force of the Paris Agreement, the dangers posed to Caribbean countries by climate change have not abated. Greenhouse gas emissions remain on a dangerously high trajectory, and every year brings with it new temperature records, alarming levels of polar ice melting, debilitating droughts and devastating floods.
This session examines the hazards posed to Caribbean and other Small Island Developing States by climate change and explores the role that civil society can play in mobilizing action to save SIDS and other climate-vulnerable countries from the existential threat posed by climate change.
